| Preparing Effective Guide Specifications for Manufacturers
Gary M. Schuman, P.E., CCS, a Professional Engineer and Certified Construction Specifier,
works with building product manufacturers to create guide specifications to industry standards.
He has prepared over 1,000 guide specs for manufacturers in the US and Canada.
Before Gary started preparing guide specs for manufacturers in 1993, he wrote project specs for
architects and engineers for 11 years. Previous to that, he spent 10 years at construction sites
as a resident engineer, owner’s representative, field engineer, and concrete inspector. Gary is a
member of ACI, ASCE, CSI, and SCIP.
Guide specs (also referred to as product guide specifications, manufacturer’s specs, or CSI
specs) are prepared in accordance with the industry-standard CSI 3-Part Format, including the
new MasterFormat 2018 Edition. Language, writing style, organization, and coordination
conform to The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) formats and principles.
Properly written up-to-date guide specs:
- Allow architects, engineers, and specifiers to easily, clearly, and correctly specify manufacturers' products.
- Communicate product information in industry-standard format.
- Minimize potential for construction problems.
Professionally prepared product guide specifications are a key element in getting building products specified. Let us show you the benefits of professionally written guide specs.
Gary has the experience to prepare guide specs for building products in all MasterFormat divisions.
